John MC ALEER

John McAleer is Associate Professor of History at the University of Southampton. He was previously Curator of Imperial and Maritime History at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. His work explores the British encounter and engagement with the wider world, situating the history of empire in its global and maritime contexts. His monographs include Representing Africa: Landscape, Exploration and Empire in Southern Africa, 1780-1870 (Manchester, 2010), Britain's Maritime Empire: Southern Africa, the South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, 1763-1820 (Cambridge, 2016), and Picturing India: People, Places and the World of the East India Company (London, 2017). His most recent work, written in conjunction with Nigel Rigby, was published by Yale University Press as Captain Cook and the Pacific: Art, Exploration and Empire.
